Earthly Evidence with Eternal Connections—Day 5 Genesis 9: 8-17  We come to the end of another weekly devotional series. We know that apart from God intervening in our lives, we would all be destined for a bleak and miserable future. Where would we be if God did not restrain himself and grant us mercy? How could we escape the imminent doom that awaits those who have rejected his salvation? Our devotional passage reads, “And God said to Noah, this is the sign of the covenant which I have established between Me and all flesh that is on the earth.” One thing that is unequivocally clear, God is trustworthy. Not only is he trustworthy, but he also does not forget what he says. He has yet to renege on his word. In other words, he stands by what he says. Ultimately, the rainbow serves as a reminder to God that he will not destroy the earth with a flood again. I wrote earlier this...

Earthly Evidence with Eternal Connections—Day 4

Earthly Evidence with Eternal Connections—Day 4 Genesis 9: 8-17 In the Hebrew language the word for bow or rainbow is the same word, qesheth, keh´-sheth which is a word for a weapon. There is a thought found in Near Eastern artifacts that there is a deity who carries a bow that symbolizes his prowess. Although the Old Testament describes Yahweh as a warrior, to suggest that the rainbow in our devotional passage speaks of God as a warrior would be a far stretch. This bow in our devotional passage does not symbolize combat; however, it is a symbol of peace and well-being. One of the compelling reasons for letting God’s Word speak free from additional thoughts, is that we are able to capture the real essence of what is being said in the Scriptures. In Genesis 6: 3 the Lord said, “My Spirit shall not strive with man forever.” This particular verse paints a picture of man being without a...

Earthly Evidence with Eternal Connections—Day 3 Genesis 9: 8-17 As we begin today’s devotional, let us do so meditating on this thought: God establishes boundaries for everyone. When my oldest son was much younger whenever he did something he knew was wrong he would respond by immediately closing his eyes as if he could disappear from my view. He believed if he could not see me then I could not see him. This was his way of avoiding the scolding he knew was coming for his disobedience. God established a covenant with both Noah and the animals. The covenant God established was that he would not devastate the earth with a flood again. Let me advise, although God will not destroy the earth with a flood again, he will deal with us. It is in our best interest not to take God lightly. Think about this for a moment, animals are not capable of accepting a covenant. That the covenant is...

Earthly Evidence with Eternal Connections—Day 2 Genesis 9: 8-17 Our devotional passage this week is the beginning of God re-establishing the world after the flood. Despite man’s sin, God has chosen to be gracious and patient toward mankind. God extended a great deal of grace to humanity and today all of us live under this remarkable grace. Though sin appears to escape the wrath of God and seems to compound the earth, let us take notice. God’s covenant with Noah was to not destroy the earth again with a flood; however, he did not say he would not deal with our sins. Our passage reads, “Now behold, I Myself do establish My covenant with you, and with your descendants after you.” Two important words in this passage are established and covenant.  The Hebrew word for establish is qûwm, koom; the word means to make stand, to erect. This verb may indicate that God is...

Earthly Evidence with Eternal Connections

Earthly Evidence with Eternal Connections Genesis 9: 8-17 Since childhood I have been fascinated by the sight of a rainbow in the sky. The beautiful colors with the sky as a backdrop are an awesome sight to see. As I matured, the rainbow continued to have visual appeal. However, today, with a more biblical understanding of its significance, the sight of the rainbow leaves my heart in awe. We see them so often and they are visual evidence given to solidify our faith in the Lord. They are reminders of the plan of our heavenly Father. When we see a rainbow, we should remember the flood of Noah, reflect on the reality of God’s existence and the relevance of his word. This should urge us on to a more commited walk with him. Our devotional passage this week places before us evidence of God’s existence and his expectations—which demand a response from us. God is reminding us that he is and...
