We Have All We Need—Day 5 Judges 6: 14-16 “And you shall defeat Midian as one man.”  As a teenager, I heard a story that helps to shape how I look at life. The story is there was a child who was getting frustrated while putting a complicated two-sided puzzle together.  The grandfather noticed the child growing irritated, asked, “What are you putting together?”  The boy replied, “It is a puzzle of the whole world.” Knowing it was a two-sided puzzle the old man asked, “What is on the other side of the puzzle?”  “It is a picture of Jesus.”  The boy said, the grandfather then asked, “Why don’t you put the side of Jesus together first, then it will not be hard to put the world together.” When we have to deal with a lot, life can be difficult; especially when we focus on how much there is to do, or how much we must...

We Have All We Need—Day 3 Judges 6: 14-15 “O Lord, how shall I deliver Israel?  Behold, my family is the least in Manasseh, and I am the youngest in my father’s house.” Self-awareness is a good attribute for us to have. It is the capacity for one to be introspective and recognize one’s personality or individuality. Our devotional today begins with Gideon being well aware of who he is. “He was the weakest man, from the lowest family, of the smallest clan in the least significant tribe.”[1] Remember, being used by God does not mean we must be unaware of who we are and our shortcomings. Gideon’s concern with the Lord’s plan was Gideon’s knowledge that he did not come from the right tribe. So, how could it be possible that he would be a deliverer? Although Gideon now begins to speak of the possibility of deliverance, he has two concerns: First, he...

We Have All We Need—Day 2 Judges 6: 14-16 “The Lord looked at him and said, Go in this your strength and deliver Israel from the hand of Midian. Have I not sent you?” Our devotional today focuses on Gideon being commanded to go in his strength to deliver Israel. One of the first questions that most people ask themselves when given a challenging assignment is, ‘Am I competent?’ It almost seems second nature to doubt ourselves, especially when the assignment has great significance. Would it be safe to say most of us size up our challenges? We compare what we are commanded to do and with the strength we have to do it. However, is that the right way to judge if we are fit? Are not we leaving God out of the equation when we judge the improbability of success based solely on our strength or competence? Remember the devotional passage begins with, “The Lord looked at...

We Have All We Need

We Have All We Need Judges 6: 14-16 Our devotional this week begins with one of Israel’s well-known Judges, Gideon. Gideon, like many of us, wondered, “If the Lord is with me, why am I going through such difficult times?” How many times have we heard of the Lord’s goodness and wondered, does the Lord see what is happening? Moreover, why is it taking Him so long to move on our behalf? Gideon prematurely arrived at two conclusions after spending time assessing his situation: First, the Lord has abandoned Israel. Second, Israel is in the situation she is in because the Lord has delivered them into the hand of the Midianites. If we would be honest with ourselves, we often look at our crisis with a sense of hopelessness. Maybe we have forgotten that God has provided us with the grace to have all we need to withstand our present circumstances. He has also given us...

We Have All We Need—Day 4 Judges 6: 14-16 “But the Lord said to him, surely I will be with you.” Once when my oldest son was around three years old I brought home, a surprise for him. After having placed it in the refrigerator, I told him where it was. Excited about the surprise, he darted for the kitchen not realizing he had to go through a dark dining room into a dark kitchen. With a puzzled look on his face, he came to a complete stop.  I asked, “What’s wrong?”  My son told me he was afraid because it was dark in the kitchen. Wanting to see him overcome his fears, I said all I could to encourage him to go through the darkness and retrieve his surprise. He then said, “But, if you go with me I will be all right.” I immediately took J.J. by his hand and walked through the darkness with him. Later I thought, ‘How much could we accomplish if believers...
