Go Get A Life–Day 5

Go Get A Life-Day 5 Psalm 127   “Behold, children are a gift of the Lord, the fruit of the womb is a reward.  Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, so are the children of one’s youth.  How blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them; they will not be ashamed when they speak with their enemies in the gate.”   As we come to the conclusion of this week’s devotional series, we focus on the second half of Psalms 127. These verses 3-5 seem to be disconnected from the first half of the Psalms. The psalmist does an excellent job of informing us, all we do is vain without the Lord. The writer does not give us a pass to be lazy. We are called to live as responsible adults who rely on God for everything. Now, the writer talks about children being a gift from God. To the ancient Israelites, a large family was considered a blessing from God and children were “Like...

Go Get A Life—Day 4

Go Get A Life—Day 4 Psalms 127 “For He gives to his beloved even in his sleep.” I have been blessed to witness the birth of five beautiful children. One of my fondest memories about my children is watching them as infants sleeping on my chest—that was some good sleep. To this day, although too big to sleep on my chest, I am still watching over each of my children while they sleep at night. Every night when they go to bed, they are not aware of what is going on around them.  As a matter of fact, they just fall asleep without a care in the world. Fall asleep without checking the doors to make sure they are locked. They go to sleep not asking will there be food in the morning, or how will we make it through tomorrow. The children go to sleep. And while they are sleeping, I visit their rooms to make sure they are sleeping well. Many nights while the children are sleeping, I go to the store...

Go Get A Life–Day 3

Go Get A Life–Day 3 Psalms 127   “Unless the Lord guards the city, the watchman keeps awake in vain. It is vain for you to rise up early, to retire late.” Some years ago, when my two eldest sons were much smaller they overheard a conversation about someone’s home being burglarized. Going to bed that night, both boys were concerned and wanted to make sure our family did not experience the same fate as others who had suffered a home invasion. Fear had taken control of their little hearts, so after my wife and I had fallen asleep, the two boys decided to rig the house in the event a burglar decided to pay us a visit. Not only did they rig the house with booby traps but both boys stayed awake clinching in their little hands a plastic baseball bat and a wooden toy rifle. How do I know this?  Well, let’s just say when I was awakened by a dry mouth and when I walked out of...

Go Get A Life—Day 2

Go Get A Life—Day 2 Psalms 127   “Unless the Lord builds the house, They labor in vain who build it.” The expression, “Go get a life.” is an idiom or catch phrase that has several uses, however; there are two applications I believe particularly fitting for this week’s devotional. First, whenever someone is spending an inordinate amount of time on something that is hopeless they are encouraged to, ‘Go get a life.’  Second, whenever someone is meddling in the affairs of someone else and getting in the way they are told to, ‘Go get a life.’ In both examples, either the one spending a lot of time on something hopeless, or spending time meddling in someone else’s affairs, precious time, that could be used for something more constructive, is taken away from what really matters. What really matters to you? Think about how much time and effort we spend fretting over things we have...

Go Get A Life

Go Get A Life Psalm 127 “Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it; unless the Lord guards the city, the watchman keeps awake in vain. It is vain for you to rise up early, to retire late, to eat the bread of painful labors; for He gives to His beloved even in his sleep.” Several years ago, I was reading a modern leadership journal when I read a story about a prominent businessman who was terminally ill. He permitted a young local writer to come and interview him while upon his death bed. Upon arrival, the writer was impressed by the property with a beautiful, large house and lovely cobblestone driveway. At the door the young writer was greeted and taken to the room of the businessman. When he walked into the room he saw not only the person to be interviewed, but the man’s wife, children, and grandchildren. Excited to spend time with such a...

Unless the Lord builds the house,
They labor in vain who build it;
Unless the Lord guards the city,
The watchman keeps awake in vain.
It is vain for you to rise up early,
To retire late,
To eat the bread of painful labors;
For He gives to His beloved even in his sleep.

Behold, children are a gift of the Lord,
The fruit of the womb is a reward.
Like arrows in the hand of a warrior,
So are the children of one’s youth.
How blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them;
They will not be ashamed
When they speak with their enemies in the gate.
